Let's Take The President At His Word

Do you think the President was right to announce that he will freeze govt spending? Even more to the point, do you beleive that he will actually do it? It remains to be seen.

In last night's State of Tthe Union address, the President called for a 5-year freeze on federal spending - up from the 3-year freeze he called for and never got last year.

Of course what he means is that all department budgets would be frozen at current levels, except maybe with some cost of living increases. They would not be allowed to expand their budgets - except of course to accommodate new programs he wants.

Essentially, it would have no impact the way it is proposed. It just sounds good.

Let's really talk about freezing spending. Putting it on ice. How do you eat a solidly frozen hamburger? Drink a solidly frozen bottle of water? Same thing for spending. If the accounts are frozen, if spending is frozen, there is no activity.

To me freezing government spending means no spending. Not a dime, not a penny. I'm all for that.

What's more, with no governemnt spending (which isn't going to happen because of the massive commitments they already have), there is no need for tax revenue. Remember that until 1913 we had no income tax and Congress got along quite well. We had a temporary one from 1862-1872 and from 1894-1895, but that was it.

Yes, by all means freeze government spending. Not one penny more than is already committed. If something else is needed, take it from another program the way we citizens do with our household and business budgets. And then begin reducing the size the budget in huge chunks, eliminating everything that is not specifically called for in the Constitution or by law.

I agree with your opinion on spending, I don't think Obama has a clue.

Thanks to Lenn for a little English lesson. All those typing classes mom made me take and I still cannot type correctly sometimes.

What he has done is increase spending by at least 25% and then is going to lock those increases in. So he increases spending like a mad man and then claims to be a fiscal conservative just in time to gear up for 2012 !!!
