At least once a week we like to have a movie night at the Robinson household. We try to watch movies that are fairly uplifting and include a good message. That is getting harder to do with some of the current movies on the scene. But, we found a good one this week.
Last night we watched a movie called October Sky. It is a true story of some young boys who are growing up in a very poor town in West Virginia. Basically the whole town economy is based upon coal mining and there does not seem to be much chance of a kid being able to break out of the mold.
One of the young men is determined to become a rocket scientist and be incolved with the space program. With his good friends and most of the town on their side, the boys strive to overcome great odds and get into a regional science fair in the hopes of getting noticed by a college recruiter. The boys know that they have no other way out of mining coal for a lifetime.
This is a highly motivational movie with a very positive message. The fact that it is true makes it even better. There is no foul language, sex, drugs or violence in the movie. A good family movie that had me really rooting for the boys.
