Food prices just went up again. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, food prices are now the highest they have been in the last two years, and almost the highest they have ever been, when adjusted for inflation. Statistics and research methods aside, it does look to me like food prices are continuing to go up.
Whether due to Bernanke trying to save Obama or some EPA ruling, the price of food is dependent on lots of factors. To the family in the house next door, the factors are irrelevant when it comes time to feed the kids. What to do.
Growing your own vegetables is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. With a little planning and some due diligence, the return on investment is huge. Even a small garden will produce a good amount of nice veggies.
Start planning now. Get online and order some seeds. Figure out where to sight your garden. Draw up a simple map of where each type of seed will go. Most seed companies will have directions as far as spacing of plants. Determine how to handle weeds and watering. Also, look into some type of storage devices.
My wife and I have been growing a huge garden (my friends call me a junior farmer) for years, and it is one of the best things we have ever done.
